Steps to Take After Discovering a Raccoon in Your Home

'Twas the night before an important business meeting and all through the house, not a creature was stirring....oh wait, besides that scratching in the attic from the raccoon that has been up there for days. Now, with an important day ahead, you're unable to sleep and be at your best in the morning. It's time to do something about and get yourself a good night's rest.

So, where do you start in the removal process of a raccoon inside your home? Here's the step-by-step process:

  1. Locate the position of the raccoon in your house
    • There are two situations for finding a raccoon in your home, either it broke in and is rummaging through the garbage or it has got into your home and is living there.
    • In the first situation, keep a safe distance and use loud noises and light to scare off the racoon. Once it has left your home, keeping the lights on in your home for the night until you can find the exact entrance point and board it up.
    • The more common situation is a mother racoon living in your attic (the chimney, garage and under the house are other common spots) to birth and protect her pups.
  2. Make the spot as unlivable as possible
    • Raccoons are looking for dark, quiet spots. Like the attic. So, if you add lights and loud noises, like a radio, there's a good chance that the racoon(s) will leave on their own.  Another humane way of getting them to leave on their own is to get some predator scents to scare them off. This works best a mother raccoon as she will look to protect her young.
  3. Clean up and board up
    • Depending on how long they were in your home, raccoons can leave quite the mess. Whether it's feces, urine, food remains or damage to your home, you'll want to get the mess cleaned up as soon as possible. While you're cleaning up the mess, search out the entrance spot and board it up to stop another animal from getting in.

On top of keeping you up all night, raccoons can do plenty of damage and leave quite the mess in and around your home. So, use these tips and remove the racoon quickly, safely and humanely before you miss another night of sleep.
